Bangladesh, Japan to Hold Bilateral Talks in Tokyo on October 27 to Boost Ties and Investment
DHAKA: Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi are scheduled to hold bilateral talks in Tokyo on October 27, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations, deepen economic cooperation and increase Japanese investment in Bangladesh.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam disclosed the information at a press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday (October 20), regarding the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to Japan. The Japanese government has also officially announced the visit.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will undertake an official visit to Japan from October 26 to 29. His wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and senior members of the government delegation are expected to accompany him.
Investment and Trade Expansion in Focus
According to the Foreign Secretary, the visit will place particular emphasis on attracting new Japanese investment to Bangladesh, accelerating ongoing development projects and expanding commercial ties between the two countries.
The discussions are expected to cover the effective implementation of the Bangladesh–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), signed in February 2026, expanding access for Bangladeshi products to the Japanese market and strengthening business-to-business connections.
Cooperation in Agriculture, Energy and Technology
Bangladesh and Japan are considering signing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in several areas, including agriculture, fisheries, human resource development, skills enhancement, civil aviation, trade, environmental protection and modernization of local government.
Discussions are underway, and some agreements or MoUs may be finalized during the visit, the Foreign Secretary said.
The two sides are also expected to explore expanded cooperation in renewable energy, science and technology, digital transformation and the development of a skilled workforce.
New Opportunities in Infrastructure and Employment
Japan has been an important development partner in several major infrastructure projects in Bangladesh, including the metro rail system, the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and the Matarbari development project.
During the upcoming visit, discussions may focus on accelerating the implementation of ongoing projects, strengthening financial cooperation and reviewing loan terms.
The two governments are also expected to emphasize Japanese industrial investment in Bangladesh, technology transfer, workforce development and the creation of new employment opportunities.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Japan–Bangladesh Economic Forum and exchange views with Japanese business leaders and investors.
Rohingya Crisis and Regional Stability
Beyond economic cooperation, the two prime ministers are expected to discuss regional and international peace and stability, a sustainable and peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis, and cooperation in addressing the global energy crisis.
Diplomatic analysts believe the visit could provide an important opportunity to broaden the existing strategic partnership between Bangladesh and Japan.
However, the specific volume of new investment and the final outcomes of any agreements remain uncertain until official announcements are made during or after the visit.
